Nominada en tres ocasiones al Oscar de Mejor Actriz Secundaria, ganándolo en una ocasión.

La reciente defunción de esta longeva actriz, el pasado domingo 15,  nos llevó a recordarla en algunos de los filmes en que lucía como una sólida actriz que derrochaba simpatía y comprensión en papeles secundarios o llamados también de soporte, en que casi siempre era la amiga de la protagonista, a la cual servía de apoyo paño de lágrimas en los conflictos amorosos de la “chica agraciada”, como fue el caso de Debbie Reynolds en “La edad del deseo” o, bien la compañera fotógrafa de Frank Sinatra, con el cual llega a irrumpir, en plan de molestos “chismosos” en la boda de Grace Kelly en el musical “Alta sociedad”, remake de “La pecadora equivocada”; pero sobre todo su soberbias interpretación en “La luz es para todos”, el excelente drama de Elia Kazan sobre el racista que todos llevamos dentro, actuación que le valió ganar el Oscar de Mejor Actriz Secundaria. Al igual que como la amiga fiel de la “insoportable”  Margo (Bette Davis) en “La malvada”, papel que le sirvió para conseguir su tercera nominación al Oscar. Pero lo cierto es que los cinéfilos allende el Río Bravo sólo tuvimos oportunidad de conocer parte de su gran talento interpretativo en la poquísimas películas en que participó, ya que el grueso de su carrera la llevó a cabo en la televisión y sobre todo en el teatro en Nueva York donde consiguió ganarse la admiración de los asiduos a los escenarios de Broadway, aunque no la del mandamás de la Fox Darryl Zanuck, el cual la “castigó” por poco más de cinco años, por no ser una actriz dúctil que  aceptara a “ciegas” realizar cualquier papel, al grado que después de trabajar en “La malvada en 1950, regresaría al cine en 1955 en la ya mencionada comedia “La edad del deseo”, producida por la MGM, razón que explica, en parte, que no participara tanto en cine y se tuviera que refugiar, por así decirlo en la televisión y el teatro.
