Murió: el 31 de agosto de 1973, en Palm Desert, California, Estados Unidos (Cáncer)

En los créditos de director en sus primeras películas firmaba como Jack Ford
Considerado uno de los grandes directores del cine norteamericano en el Siglo XX. Su nombre aparece en cualquier lista entre los CINCO mejores y en algunas de ellas como el número UNO. (Los otros dos que, invariablemente, aparecen en ese grupo son Charles Chaplin y Orson Welles).
Nominado al Oscar en CINCO ocasiones. Lo ganó en CUATRO de ellas. Lo curioso es que la nominación en la que no ganó el Oscar fue en 1939 por LA DILIGENCIA, considerada por el paso del tiempo como un clásico, por encima de las cuatro ganadoras; en tanto “El Delator” y “Qué Verde era mi valle”, (dos de las triunfadorasa) han “perdido” su sitial de preferencia. Igualmente sus otros tres westerns considerados entre los 25 mejores de todos los tiempos “Pasión de los Fuertes”; “Un Tiro en la Noche” y “Más Corazón que Odio” (el número uno del género) no recibieron una mísera nominación al Oscar en ninguna categoría.
