Hijo de la actriz Jean Hathaway y del actor y representante teatral Rhody Hathaway, no es de extrañar que en su infancia Henry actuara en teatro y algunas películas en calidad de extra, pero al terminar la Primera Guerra Mundial, enfocó sus baterías detrás de las cámaras, en diversas labores, hasta que fue asistente de dirección con personajes de la talla de Allan Dwan, Josef von Sternberg, Fred Niblo y Victor Fleming, hasta que en 1932 debutó como director en western clase “B” en la Paramount, para más tarde irse a la 20th Century Fox. En el primero rodó 18 películas y en el segundo 30, pero como su contrato con la Fox era anual, eso le permitió filmar en otros estudios, al igual que producir algunas películas por su cuenta. En sentido estricto Henry Hathaway no está considerado entre los grandes autores-directores, pero de cierta manera es algo más que un mero artesano, aunque su fama la debe más que nada a su capacidad técnica y su gran oficio para desempeñarse con soltura en todos los géneros, aunque destacó más en los de acción, como el western, thriller, policiaco, bélico y aventuras, pues fue alguien que sabía sacar mucho provecho de la filmación en exteriores. Sabía combinar o hacer hibridaciones genéricas como podría ser el caso de sus westerns “Dos Contra el Destino” y “Poker de la Muerte”, que también podrían ser tildadas o encasilladas como muestras de “cine negro” o policiaco en el oeste, por mencionar sólo a estos dos. Un repaso somero a su filmografía, para un cinéfilo de un poco más de cincuenta años, le provocará gratos recuerdos, pues varias de ellas, aparte de ser éxitos de taquilla, fueron muy populares entre los espectadores, independientemente de quién fuera su realizador. Hathaway se ufanaba de que “para ser un buen director hay que ser un hijo de puta. Yo soy un hijo de puta y lo sé”; lo cual de ninguna manera es una exageración, ya que solía tener conflictos con casi todas las estrellas de sus filmes y de varias películas fue echado fuera de su rodaje debido en parte a ello, como fue el caso de sus conflictos con Kim Novak, Van Johnson y Marilyn Monroe, entre otros, pero independientemente del ambiente de tensión que provocaba en sus rodajes, si podemos encontrar una obra homogénea, con varias virtudes para la acción y con gran acierto plástico en sus composiciones que hacen agradable la visión de sus películas.
